School feeding programme for Lebanese & Syrian refugee children

kidThe World Food Programme partnered with the Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MEHE) to deliver healthy school snacks and classes on good nutrition. Students in 39 double shift primary schools receive a mix of fresh fruit, milk and baked peanuts - all products from Lebanon.

It's impacts:

  • Working with schools in vulnerable areas, the daily snack pack is an incentive to improve children's access and retention in school, improve a child's concentration as well as improve nutritional outcomes with dietary diversity.
  • The monthly nutrition education sessions by school health educators introduce importance of health eating and physical activity, among other nutrition topics. Health and nutrition summer camps were most recently launched in six schools with 1,010 children participating in one wave.
  • By April 2019, five million school snacks had been distributed across Lebanon while schools saw a decline in absenteeism.
